3 Ways Your Family Can Serve Others This Holiday Season

by | Dec 14, 2017 | Leadership

The holiday season is the busiest time of year, but it’s also one of the most enjoyable times of year to spend with family. Between huge family gatherings complete with every single cousin on the family tree and Grandma’s homemade Christmas cookies and cozy family nights spent with loved ones by the fire, it seems as though the holidays already call for enough family time. But look beyond your family and consider serving those in need this holiday season to create the most memorable family experience and perhaps establish a new family holiday tradition. Here are 3 ways your family can serve others this holiday season.

Adopt a family

There are plenty of programs out there that support families in need. And what better way to get your family to spread the Christmas spirit than giving the gift of Christmas to a family who needs it. Take your family out holiday shopping for Christmas gifts for members of an entire family to give them a Christmas they are not able to provide themselves and watch how many sizes your hearts grow.

Brighten up a nursing home

Contact your local nursing home and find out what kind of events they have scheduled for the holiday season. Get your family members involved in whatever is going on. Maybe you just bake some holiday treats for the Christmas dinner, or perhaps you bring everyone to join in singing Christmas carols. Whatever you do, make sure you stick around and get to know the people who live there. You never know the difference you can make.

Give your local homeless shelter a visit

The possibilities to serve the homeless are limitless at all times of the year, but especially during the holiday season. Reach out to your local homeless shelter and figure out what kind of opportunities are available for you and your family to get involved with to truly make a difference in the lives of people who need it most. Work in the soup kitchen, pass out blankets, or even write holiday cards to spread some Christmas love to people who don’t have a place to call home this holiday season.

The holidays are a busy time of year, but if you and your family reach out and make a difference in the lives of others this season, you will experience the Christmas spirit in a way you never have before.
