You Control Your Attitude

Although it doesn’t always seem like it, you are in control of your own attitude. No matter your external circumstances, you choose your outlook. When unfortunate events happen, you decide whether or not to let them corrupt your headspace. In some instances, these less-than-ideal happenings are hard to ignore. They can cause you to feel like you’ve lost control of your own mood and mindset. Here are some ways to improve your attitude when the world is pushing you down.

Change Your Attitude’s Latitude

When it begins to get colder in northern territories, many people “snowbird” out. This means that they leave the cold and head toward places that are closer to the equator. People do this to improve their mood by staying in a warmer climate. They typically return to their original location in the spring or summer, when the temperatures are rising. Instead of moving your physical body to a warmer climate to improve your mood, move your attitude there—mentally.

Even if it’s not cold outside, your attitude might be covered in snow. Consider these bits of advice, to start melting that snow away.

  • Think more positively. The way you think has a significant influence on your overall attitude. If you’re constantly negative, your attitude will be, too.
  • If one task is holding you back from getting other things done, quit worrying about it and just do it. The more you overthink it, the more time you waste.
  • Be thankful for everything you do have, not regretful of the things you don’t have.
  • Avoid gossip and drama. Focus on your accomplishments and shortcomings, instead of those of others.
  • Forgive and forget. When an individual lets you down, forgive them. Energy is wasted on being upset.
  • When you find yourself getting frustrated and becoming negative, take a moment to calm down. Practice some deep breathing and imagine your happy place.

Your attitude is a combination of thoughts, feelings, and actions, that you control. Each attribute influences the other. Positive thoughts create positive feelings, and positive feelings lead to positive actions. Inversely, if you take a positive action while feeling negative, your feelings will change. You’ll begin feeling more optimistic and, in turn, will start to think more optimistically.

As an example, imagine that a friend treated you disrespectfully by revealing one of your secrets. Their action would probably upset you and have you feeling negatively. Instead of letting that negativity seep in, go spread positivity! Compliment a stranger, tip a server well, or pay for someone else’s coffee—and you’ll certainly start to feel better.

An Attitude Removed from Outside Influences

If you’re the type of person who is influenced by your setting, remove yourself from it. Some people are easily persuaded and should avoid situations that could sway their attitude. If you’re surrounded by pessimistic people whose negativity tends to rub off on you, separate yourself from that crowd. When you watch a TV show with content that makes you upset, turn it off. This same rule applies to any content that has a negative effect on you. Try to find a place where your attitude will be unaffected by outside influences.

When you find this place, whether physical or mental, you can do the following things to maintain a positive attitude:

  • Expect the best out of every situation. This doesn’t mean that you can’t be prepared for the worst.
  • Learn from the past, live in the present, and be ready for the future.
  • Don’t compare yourself to other people. Everyone’s journey is different.
  • Use your manners. Being kind and respectful yields positive results.
  • Search for opportunities to learn from bad situations. There’s always something positive to take away from negative situations.

Keep Your Head Up

Maintaining a good attitude will not only improve your mental health, it also boosts your physical health. Are there really any good reasons to have a bad attitude? Of course not. A positive attitude will improve your mood, health, and mindset. With those improvements, you can then focus on helping the people around you change their attitudes, too!

While you’re in the process of rebranding your attitude, consider exposing yourself to more positive news. The word on the street is, positive news has a strong impact on your mood.

Don’t Miss the Big Picture

Imagine driving through a beautiful mountain range while staring only at the dashboard. You’d know your speed, your fuel level, and the temperature outside, but you’d miss the very reason people travel that road in the first place. Life has a way of...
